CHAPTER FOURTEEN

He knew he was taking a risk. I knew he was perhaps committing his first mistake of a faultless campaign so far. But he just couldn't resist.

When you throw a stone into a pond, it causes ripples. He had hurled a huge boulder in, and he wanted to see the tsunamis that his actions had caused firsthand.

Because this was more than just about freeing himself. Escaping from the bars that had been constructed around him all of his life.

It was also about fighting back. Destroying the system that had created those bars. Annihilating the cause of all of his and life’s problems. Dismantling it brick by brick. Person by person. Until nothing remained.

He stood at the end of the street, hanging back behind the gaggle of sightseers drawn by the flashing blue lights and the promise of drama that normally could only be viewed on their plasma television sets or movie screens.

In front of the sightseers was the group of people he was particularly interested in. The police. There were way more than he had expected, and the sheer impact his actions had had gave him a rush, almost as big as the one he had felt while driving the knife repeatedly into the back of Schmeling.

There were people from the local PD as well as from the Sheriff's department. He feasted on their worried, businesslike expressions. Their anxious mannerisms. Their job was to protect the people, and yet here, one of the most respected and wealthiest citizens of the city had been slain in his own home.

How little they knew.

He was just about to leave, his already fevered mind split between the desire to soak the whole scene up for as long as possible and the need for caution when he saw something that made him stop in his tracks.

As well as the uniformed officers and those from forensics in their white coveralls, two other people had stepped out of the house.

He studied them, his heart beating fast. He had no idea why, but a hard knot of fear had settled in his stomach. They were a man and a woman; their appearance alone set them apart from everyone around them. The man, tall, stocky, but athletically built with short, thick black hair, was dressed in black trousers, a dark blue shirt, open at the neck, and a black jacket.

The woman was a few inches shorter, slim, with a black bob haircut that hung between her ears and her shoulders. She was dressed in black boots, black trousers, and a jacket with a round-necked black T-shirt beneath.

They had a different air about them. He couldn't put his finger on what it was, but he knew instantly he didn't like it. He watched the woman look around as if searching for someone. He knew he should go, knew he mustn't do anything that would jeopardize his plan, but he couldn't tear his eyes from them, the woman especially.

For a sickening second, she looked in his direction, looked right at him, and then Sheriff Faulkner walked over and began talking to them.
