* The first Football Association Challenge Cup competition took place in 1872 and had fifteen entrants. Under the original format, the winner had the right to defend their title the following year, with all the remaining teams competing for the right to challenge the holder. This format was later dropped but the phrase ‘Challenge Cup’ was retained for the trophy. The first final was played at Kennington Oval, which hosted it a further twenty times. Between 1893 and 1923, the location of the final venue was unfixed until the completion of Wembley Stadium gave the competition its permanent home. The first Wembley final descended into chaos as 200,000 people, vastly more than the capacity, tried to squeeze into the new stadium. The following year it was made an all-ticket event.
