Chapter 13
Tuesday
âA
nge, do you actually know where we are going?â
âNot exactly, but âLord Google of the Knights of Mapâ says stay on Snowden for another mile.â
I kept on course but something was nagging at me.
âWhatâs the deal with your Uncle Tim?â
âYou really want to ask that now?â
âWell, both your Gram and your father gave me warnings about him tonight. Iâve never heard anyone talk about him until tonight and that has me concerned for tomorrow. And while weâre at it, Iâm still not sure why we had to run out of the house all of a sudden earlier, and I have no idea where we are going and who we are seeing and I think Iâve been a pretty good sport about it but Iâd likeââ
âTurn left here.â
I did.
âIâd like toââ
âAnd turn right there,â she pointed at a dark dirt road. I could see a huge light in the distance as I turned, obscured by a grove of trees that made it feel like we were driving through a cave.
âGot it. But, Iâd like toââ
âAnd, one more left turn and we are good. I think.â
I turned and we found ourselves on a private gravel road. A gigantic home with huge windows awash with light appeared like a vision once weâd passed through the last of the dense population of trees. The house was very square, sort of like the builder had taken a bunch of blocks and built a multi-level home from them.
Someone had just pulled a vintage Saab out of a spot in front of the driveway, so we were able to slide right in. The driver of the Saab waved at us cheerily and zoomed off into the night.
âHere we are!â Angie said, fixing her scarf and reaching for the door.
âJust a minute there, love,â I said, grasping her hand. âI just asked you four questions and you avoided them all completely.â
She turned and smiled way too big and blinked her eyes at me.
âYeah, thatâs not working this time, Ange.â
âDrat!â she exclaimed. âI could kiss you until you forget?â
I thought about it for a moment. âWhile that would probably work, might I propose a compromise?â
âVery well,â she purred, suddenly yanking a small container of lip gloss out of one of her many hidden pockets.
I found it difficult to focus for a moment as she applied it to her lips, the beacon-like brightness of the house making them shine like a hidden treasure. âYeah, um. How about you answer at least one of my questions and then kiss me?â
She nodded in a very businesslike way, as though she were considering options for her stock portfolio as she pocketed the lip gloss and sat up close to me, our faces suddenly less than an inch apart. âWhat would you likeâ¦to know?â she asked, her voice seeming to lower almost a full octave and barely approaching a whisper.
âUm.â
âYes?â
I couldnât really remember my earlier questions and was about to just give in to her amazingly attractive method of obfuscation when I simply reached for the most obvious.
