Calli
âJoel, hey,â I said as he approached Professor Haroldâs class.
âHey, Calli.â He barely met my eyes and a sinking feeling spread through me.
âI was hoping we could talk for a minute.â Iâd gotten here early for that very reason. âListen, I owe you an apology.â
âItâs all good,â he said coolly. âWe should probably go inside. We donât want to be late.â Joel shouldered past me and made for the door, but I grabbed his arm.
âJoel, please.â
He raked a hand through his hair and let out a heavy sigh. âI knew, you know. I knew there was something weird between the two of you...â
âIâm sorry. Itâs complicated.â
âYeah, thatâs what Messiah said.â
My brows pinched. âHe talked to you about me?â
âNo, Calli. He talked to me about the situation.â
âOh.â
My heart sank.
âBut I see where your heart lies.â Dejection burned in his eyes and I hated it. Joel was a good guy. He deserved better than how Iâd treated him. But Iâd gotten to SU and everything had been so confusing.
âI didnât know Zach went here.â
âWhat? How is that even possible?â
âCallum and I arenât exactly close. Thereâs a lot he didnât tell people.â
âNo shit.â Joel tugged at the neckline on his jersey and I figured he probably felt as uncomfortable as I did right now. âIf Iâd have known who you were, Calli, we wouldnât even be having this conversation right now.â
âWow, okay.â My eyes darted to the ground as I clutched the strap of my messenger bag. âI donât even know what to say to that.â
âItâs just how it is.â He shrugged, oblivious to just how deep his words cut. âTeammates donât date each otherâs sisters. It makes things messy.â
âI see.â My lips thinned.
âI like you, Calli, I do, but it could never have gone anywhere.â
âYouâd really give up someone you liked for the team?â
âItâs just how it is.â
I lifted my chin, letting my hurt give me strength. âThen I guess youâre not the guy I thought you were.â
âI guess Iâm not.â He gave me a sad smile. âSee you around.â Joel ducked into the room, taking the air with him.
When I finally made myself go inside, I was hardly surprised to see Joel sitting down in one of the front rows.
Heâd made his choice.
And it was the team.
