Complete quietness enveloped me as I sat on the deck just outside the kitchen. After hours of kissing, talking, and snuggling with Jo, she’d fallen asleep. I carried her to bed then made my way downstairs. My mind was too active to sleep. I wanted to plan where Jo and I would get married and how our first night together would be. I had all sorts of ideas on how to please her. But with the looming problems we were facing ahead of us, I couldn’t shake my conversation with George. It replayed over and over in my head like a broken record. I was beginning to realize that maybe I’d made the wrong decision to drop off the grid.

Fuck.

My need to kill my enemies and disobey the commander was getting in the way of Jo’s safety. I would never forgive myself if Edmund took her under my watch. Sure, I was resolute that I was the only one who could protect her. But I was also a fool if I thought her father couldn’t watch over her. He had so far. Hell, we all had so far. The entire sentinel team did nothing but guard her, and she was alive because of it.

My burner phone lay in my lap as my stomach churned like a storm at sea. I picked it up and dialed as I fixated on the waning night sky. The line rang once.

“Hello.” Steven’s deep voice was clear as though he hadn’t gone to bed yet.

“It’s me.”

“Mm.”

I couldn’t tell from that one word if he was surprised or not. I assumed he would tear into me as soon as he heard my voice.

“The twins are safe.” Four seconds of silence. I checked the screen. The line was still connected. “Commander?” Maybe he was trying to track my whereabouts. “You won’t be able to get a lead on me. I’m on an old burner phone that doesn’t have tracking on it.” The most he could do was pinpoint a cell tower or two, but that would only lead him to nowhere. I was a SEAL after all. I knew how to drop off the radar.

“I’m not tracking you. I know you, Webb. I taught you how to go off the grid. What I am doing is trying not to lose my shit. You and the twins return to base today, and I won’t throw you in the brig.”

I raised my eyebrows. His tone was quite mellow for someone trying not to blow his top, especially Steven Mason. “What gives? No offense, Steven. You’re never forgiving or nice when someone disobeys you.”

“One, I know you would protect my kids. Two, I’m grateful that you decided to disappear with them because we encountered Bruno and Edmund in Alaska. We almost lost the wolf shifter, but she’s alive and a little bruised. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful in killing either Bruno or Edmund.”

It was good to hear that Crysta was okay. “Where are they now?” I asked.

“Don’t know. Our intel tells me that there’s been a ton of activity at a warehouse in Anchorage.
