CHAPTER 31

Joe Reardon shielded his eyes against the sun as he watched the golf ball. The small white orb rose high in the blue sky, above the canopy of greenery that shrouded Addiscombe Golf Course. His partner, Jerry, had just teed off. They were doing nine holes today, half the course. That would take them till lunchtime, easily. Jerry had a good handicap, and Joe was trying his best to beat him.

“Nice shot,” Joe said, as they watched the ball bounce far away, but within putting distance of the first hole. A medium iron would take it to within a birdie putt, he thought. Damn, his first shot needed to be a good one as well.

He took out the long iron and put the tee in the ground. He did a couple of practice swings, doing everything his instructor had taught him. It felt good. There was no need to do anything different when he was hitting the ball. Like his instructor said, close your eyes and imagine the dream swing, forget about the ball. Well, he didn’t mean that literally, he had to keep his eyes open. But Joe got the message. He had to ignore the ball and focus on the swing. That was his mantra in life, anyway. Focus on the positives, forget the negatives.

He got to the patch and spread his legs a little in line with his shoulders so they took his weight well. He worked out on his abs, improving the strength on his sixty-six-year-old core muscles. That was key to a good swing, according to his instructor.

He hit the ball cleanly, and watched it soar straight up, at a low trajectory, as it had to cross almost three hundred yards. His lips split into a smile as a murmur of appreciation rose from the few golfers who were queuing up behind him. It was probably the best tee shot of his life.

He couldn’t believe how straight it went, right over the middle of the course. He didn’t try to hit it too hard, and that helped. Like Fiona, his wife, always said, women are better golfers because they don’t hit the ball too hard. Direction was more important, when starting out. Well Fiona didn’t play in a league like he did, so she didn’t have to worry about force. Joe couldn’t afford ten shots to finish the first hole, that would mean his handicap always stayed low. He was nothing if not competitive.

“Great shot,” Jerry said, in his American accent. “You nailed that, baby.”

“Thanks,” Joe grinned, aware that behind Jerry’s genial attitude lay a true competitor. “But it’s still early days.”

They got in the caddy, and Jerry drove down to the first hole. “How’s the council doing?” Jerry asked. “Elections coming up soon, right?”

“Yes, in two months. We’re hoping to keep the council Labour. Addiscombe has been a Labour ward for so long, but the Tories are pressing in from all sides.”

Jerry turned the wheel to avoid a golfer with his caddie and waved at him.
