Chapter 15
When Emily got home from the hardware store, she was surprised to see her dadâs truck wasnât there. Where would he go on a Saturday afternoon? She pondered this for only a moment before shrugging and entering the house. She placed the bag of supplies for Arlene by the door so she wouldnât forget where she put them for Monday.
She felt heat rise to her face, and her palms became sweaty the moment she realized she was all alone and could take this opportunity to look over her photos from the other day without an audience.
They had looked okay when they were on the tiny screen on her camera, but pulling them up on a computer screen would give her a more realistic view of her talent, or lack thereof.
She walked around the kitchen table, which was used more for a holding area for odds and ends than eating, and opened up the laptop which had been sitting there, charging for days.
She reached for the nearby camera bag and with slightly-shaking hands removed the memory card. It had been a long time since she was excited about something. She was eager and hopeful that she would have photos worth sharing, but she was also scared she would discover she had messed something up and would discover her thumb in the bottom of every shot or something.
After what seemed like ages, waiting for the program to open, she eagerly clicked through the photos she had taken.
She was able to release her tense breath upon seeing they were actually pretty decent. Her distance shots of the apple orchard and the mountains didnât have the best lighting, but they were in focus, and the colors from the apple blossoms looked great against the green leaves and mountainous backdrop.
She continued clicking through, marking a few that might be worth asking Arlene for help editing. The orchards, a few of the gardens, the bike. She was so focused on finding a photo to show her grandma, she was startled when a picture of Brandon popped up.
He was frozen with a broad smile on his face, his hand beginning to raise in protest. Although she noted a few of his other features, like his strong, square chin, covered in stubble, his relaxed posture on the bench, with one arm spread along the back as if welcoming someone to fill the space within his arm; her gaze was drawn to his eyes.
Her heart raced again. Even though she knew it was only a still image of Brandon, she felt as if he were looking into her eyes the way she was looking into his. She calmed down by reassuring herself that Brandon had no idea she was sitting here staring at him in a way she could never with the real Brandon, not without revealing more than she could bear.
The creases around his eyes clearly indicated that he had been smiling often and for years. She wondered what it would be like to have a life so full of happiness.
