MOMENTS

I GO TO the window and peek out. My stepfather is standing on the sidewalk, his usually placid visage purple with rage. Someone has told on me.

“Get down here!” he shouts.

I am surprised to see him. I have always liked him; he has always been kind to me. But he rarely takes a strong role in parenting – that’s Mom’s job. Besides, I thought he had moved out. Could this mean…?

“NOW!” he roars.

It is the evening after my detention. I have gone to the house of a friend who lives near the high school. I have made no plans beyond surviving the night. I have no need of making them now.

I slip on my jacket and tiptoe down the stairs. My friend and her family are standing at the bottom. I glance at my friend. I don’t look at her parents. I already know she’s going to be in trouble for hiding me.

In the car on the way back to the house, my stepfather yells at me. It is the only time in eight years that he has ever yelled at me.

“Do you know how worried your mother is?’ he snarls. “Don’t you dare pull anything like this again!”

I look out the window at the pretty, quiet streets of our suburban town. The yards are empty. The sidewalks are empty. I am empty.

There is no one to help me. Why won’t anyone help me?
