10. Some Beliefs of Man, in Man, for Man

The “most personal” book that Fromm ever wrote is Beyond the Chain of Illusion: My Encounter with Marx and Freud, published in 1962. The book begins with an autobiographical chapter and concludes with Fromm’s much-quoted “Credo,” in which he summarizes, in a sort of confession of belief, his view of man and his insights into the progressive or regressive dynamics of human and social processes. The following “humanist’s credo,” published here for the first time, is Fromm’s humanistic confession of belief. It was presumably written in 1965 as an addendum to his book The Heart of Man: its Genius for Good and Evil (1964).
