There is one patient in hospital who is an example to us all. His name is Bookman, one of the Machine-gunners. Some say he is a half-caste aboriginal, others that he is a throw-back. But he is a fine intelligent chap with a ton of guts, whom everybody up here calls: ‘a bonza bloke’. He has dysentery and cannot leave the latrine for any length of time. He is harrowed, weak and bedraggled. When he can, he simply rolls himself up in his blanket by the latrine, in the strewn fire-ash which is spread for hygiene. This morning Major Moon, one of our doctors said, ‘How are you this morning, Bookie?’

‘Not too bad, sir . . . only twenty-nine-times last night.’

Men bitter, cantankerous, pompous, jealous, afraid . . . then, men like Bookie.
