I woke to my phone blaring out Palmer’s ringtone, the theme from the show True Detective. “You’re up early,” I said.

“Bad news. I need you to come do a preliminary identification for me. Are you in your apartment?”

My heart sank. “Eunice?” I asked.

“Unofficially, yes. She doesn’t have family in the area, so you’re the next best person for the ID. Where are you?”

“I’m at Proctor House. I’ll be ready in ten minutes.”

I hung up and looked at the clock. Six fifteen. Too early to identify people. Too early to be out of bed. Too early to have to explain to my family that another woman we knew was dead.

The floor was cool to my feet, so I quickly threw on my clothes for the day, including the enchanted pants Delia had given me. Never dirty, never wrinkled, they were perfect for a morning like this.

I brushed my hair and teeth in the bathroom and snuck downstairs, shoes in my hand so I didn’t wake anyone. The kitchen was dark and empty, but I knew Aunt Nadia would be up soon.

I left a note telling my family I was out early with Palmer and would be home later this morning. I didn’t want to leave any details, because there was a small chance Palmer was wrong and the woman they found wasn’t Eunice. I held onto that hope, even though I knew it would be dashed soon.

I sat in the dark kitchen, waiting for Palmer. I didn’t dare wait outside, or even turn the lights on, for fear of someone outside waiting to harm another witch.

Only when I heard his car door close did I go to the door. He opened it and I was shocked by how upset he looked. “Is your grandmother home?”

Was she? I wasn’t sure. “She was when I went to bed last night. Do you need me to check?”

He nodded. “For my own peace of mind.”

I crept quietly to Grandma’s bedroom door and opened it a crack. She was in her bed, and I waited a moment to make sure she was breathing. Once I saw her chest rise, I closed her door and returned to Palmer.

“Sound asleep in her bed,” I said.

He let out a sigh of relief. “Hester, Eunice, several women further north. I was afraid she’d be next. I’m still afraid for her. We’re well into serial killer territory now.”

My knees went weak. Serial killer? Who only targeted witches? Keeping our identity secret from Palmer wasn’t going to help his investigation.

Palmer hugged me. “I’m going to do everything I can to keep her safe, starting with posting Papatonis on night duty out front.”

It was a lovely gesture, but I doubted the Cook brothers would be intimidated by one officer, particularly one with no powers of his own. “Thank you.”

He kept an arm around me as we walked to his car. “How was she killed?” I asked. I wasn’t sure I was ready to see anything horrific.

“She looks a lot like Hester did, but laid to rest in the park.
