Twenty-Three
Monday morning, I’m back in Muldowney’s homeroom, waiting for the bell so he can take attendance. We’re back to our usual routines. Homeland Security instructed us that if anyone asks the trip was good but uneventful, and we barely left the hotel. But mostly no one asks since the details of the trip were a secret even before we ran into a metahuman.
“Connolly.”
“Here,” I say, snapping out of my daze to answer the call for attendance. I look up from my desk at Muldowney. He looks like he missed a spot or two shaving this morning. There are dark circles under his eyes. He looks away from me and down at the next name on his paper.
There are only two more minutes until homeroom is over, so I take advantage of it by pulling my hoodie up and resting my head on my folded arms, hoping to catch a glorious 120 seconds of sleep. I’ve barely shifted into a more comfortable position when a strange feeling comes over me.
I lift my head, and in a panic, yank down the sleeves of my hoodie. My metabands are somehow visible around my wrists without my consciously summoning them. I glance around to see if anyone has noticed, but they haven’t.
With my metabands securely hidden under my hoodie sleeves, I close my eyes and concentrate on shifting them out of reality like I have hundreds of times before. But when I open my eyes and pull up my sleeves, they’re still there. There’s something else odd about them, a sensation, almost like they’re warm. I glide my fingers across the left band’s surface, expecting to feel the same sensation, but I don’t. They feel the same as they always have.
“Everything all right, Mr. Connolly?” Muldowney asks.
I practically jump out of my seat and blurt, overdoing it by 100 percent, “Yup, yes, absolutely. Everything is fine. A-okay.”
Muldowney gives me a strange look and then continues taking attendance.
I’ve never had them not respond before. My worst fears about my metabands going haywire and then losing their powers are coming true, and it’s horrifying.
“Connolly, come up here for a minute,” Muldowney says.
He’s done taking attendance, and the rest of the students are talking amongst themselves, so I avoid getting an “ooh” from anyone. I stand and awkwardly fidget with my shirtsleeves as I approach Muldowney’s desk. When I get closer, I can see just how bad a shape he’s in. Besides the scruff along his jaw, it looks like his shirt hasn’t been ironed. He might have been told not to talk about the events in Wichita Meadows, but it’s obvious he spent the weekend thinking about them.
“Do you have last week’s assignment for me?” he asks.
Oh crap. I completely forgot.
“Um, let me see if it’s in my backpack,” I say, desperately buying time to think.
“You’re not sure if it’s in your backpack? Did you actually complete the assignment, Mr. Connolly?”
“Oh yeah, definitely.”
“So, you completed the assignment, which is already a week late, but after the
