Brewster wasn’t happy about the cancellation.

“I won’t mince words. It’s your funeral, Joey.”

“I tell you, I don’t feel tender there any more. The thing is gone. Or at least it’s in remission.”

“You’re not in any position to determine that.”

“Nevertheless,” McDermott said. “I’m quitting the chemo.”

“Hey, nobody likes it. I know it’s a miserable thing. But you’ve got to go through with it. At least come down here and let me check out this so-called remission of yours. You weren’t looking good last time I saw you, Joe. The Oncology Center people are starting to think it’s time for you to move on to radiation treatments.”

McDermott felt a savage internal thump. A little warning, to keep him in line.

“I don’t think radiation treatments will be necessary either, Dave.”

“I want to look you over, at least. I can’t just authorize cessation of therapy over the phone like this. It’s completely improper.”

Another thump, an even more agonizing one. McDermott grunted and doubled up.

“What was that?” Brewster asked.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“I want to see you at nine tomorrow, all right?”

“No,” said McDermott. “Sorry. I just can’t make it, Dave.”

He put down the phone.
