CHAPTER 14

BISHOP

I had been dodging Emmett's attempts at getting together for the last month and change, and so far, so good. Unfortunately, there was no way of getting away from myself.

I still couldn't believe I had actually sunk to sleeping with him. Yes, I had been in heat, but that was no excuse. Contrary to what some alphas liked to believe, omegas in heat weren't mindless thralls to our own instincts.

It wasn't just what had happened between us that made me want to avoid him, although that was certainly reason enough. It was the fact that not a week later, it had been formally announced that a vote would be held to determine the future of governance within the pack.

I knew the decision was a direct result of Emmett's little speech at the council meeting, and I had no reason to think that what had happened between us would make him change his mind. If anything, he probably just saw it as proof that I wasn't actually that serious about my convictions.

For that, I could really only blame myself.

That night, avoiding him was going to be impossible. Emmett's parents had invited me to a gathering they were having to celebrate the fact that Colton's illness was officially in remission, and I couldn't exactly refuse.

Okay, so I could, but I didn't have the heart to. It wasn't their fault their son and I had become mortal enemies, and I didn't want the family thinking I had any hard feelings over matters that were between me and Emmett.

The only hope I had for the evening not being a complete awkward clusterfuck was the fact that I knew Emmett didn't have much support for his recent decisions within his own family. If the night was awkward for me, it was guaranteed to be even worse for him.

As long as he kept his mouth shut about what had happened. And if he didn't, we were going to have even bigger problems. Problems he couldn't get rid of by just calling a vote.

I really did not want to admit that any part of me was concerned with how I looked that night because of him. I told myself I was just putting the usual care into my appearance that I would have wherever I was going. And it wasn't like I was wearing ceremonial robes or anything. Just a nice new button-down shirt, a vest, and khakis.

As I drove to the Whitaker family home, my thoughts drifted to more practical concerns. Namely, the fact that I was technically due for another heat that had yet to come.

It wasn't unheard of for more than a month to pass between heats. Some omegas only had them once every few months, but in my case, they had been as regular as clockwork pretty much since they had started.

I had no idea what I was going to do if I was pregnant. I wouldn't even let myself think about it, not only because that led me to kicking myself
