Chapter 9
In the last few weeks alone, the three friends had grown more than theyâd thought was possible. Theyâd stopped living in hypotheticals and stepped up to face the prophecy and all the dangers that came along with it head-on.
They forsook the castle for a life in the woods. Exchanged silken sheets for pine needles and smoky campfires. Morning Champagne was replaced with swigs from the communal water flask, as their days of riding and laughing and socializing became a fight for their very lives.
If it wasnât bandits in the woods, it was villagers in the tavern. If it wasnât the suffocating mine shaft beneath the ground, it was the mythical snake that prowled its chambers.
Theyâd changed. Adapted. Discovered a strength they never knew they had.
But nothing can prepare you for the sight of a half-crazed witch with her head on fire...
The three friends froze in absolute horror as she thrashed around on the ground in front of themâwrithing and twisting, sending up blasphemous shrieks to the sky. They stepped back in unison as she crashed into the wall of the shed. Then Ellanden, seeing no better alternative, reached out and pulled Freya inside with themâcovering her eyes as her mistress succumbed to death.
It took ages. Far longer than would have seemed possible. When at last they thought sheâd finally expired, she threw back her head with a final bloodcurdling cry.
âSeven hells,â Evie gasped, averting her eyes.
The boys were still watching, but both looked grim. Even borderline sick. When the witchâs roasted arm fell with a thud against the wall, sending up a cloud of smoke, Ellanden pulled in a sharp breath and turned his face.
âIs it over?â Freya whispered, clutching fistfuls of his cloak. âIs she gone?â
The fae glanced at his friends for quick confirmation before tightening his grip on the girl, holding her safe against his chest. âYes, child. Sheâs gone.â
Slowly, he released her. Slowly, the friends took a steadying breath.
âWe need to get out of here,â Asher said in a low undertone. âShe said the men would arrive in the morning, and itâs almost dawn. And if they saw the fire...â
...they were bound to have quickened their pace.
âWhere will you go?â Freya asked, staring numbly around what used to be her yard.
âWhere will we go,â Ellanden corrected quickly, using the keys to free the others. âDonât be ridiculous; youâre coming with us.â
The girl looked up in surprise, while both his friends stiffened behind her back.
âWeâll take you away from this place, surely,â Evie said tentatively, trying to catch the faeâs eye. âAnd we can decide what to do from there.â
âWhat is there to decide?â he demanded, missing all of those covert âcan-we-talk-about-this-in-privateâ looks he was getting from the other two. âThe girl saved our lives. Weâre in her debt.â
After getting the princessâ elbow in his ribs, Asher stepped forward with a sigh.
âAnd I can think of no worse way to repay such a debt than by keeping her with us. The road weâre to travel is not an easy one.
