Chapter 9

In the last few weeks alone, the three friends had grown more than they’d thought was possible. They’d stopped living in hypotheticals and stepped up to face the prophecy and all the dangers that came along with it head-on.

They forsook the castle for a life in the woods. Exchanged silken sheets for pine needles and smoky campfires. Morning Champagne was replaced with swigs from the communal water flask, as their days of riding and laughing and socializing became a fight for their very lives.

If it wasn’t bandits in the woods, it was villagers in the tavern. If it wasn’t the suffocating mine shaft beneath the ground, it was the mythical snake that prowled its chambers.

They’d changed. Adapted. Discovered a strength they never knew they had.

But nothing can prepare you for the sight of a half-crazed witch with her head on fire...

The three friends froze in absolute horror as she thrashed around on the ground in front of them—writhing and twisting, sending up blasphemous shrieks to the sky. They stepped back in unison as she crashed into the wall of the shed. Then Ellanden, seeing no better alternative, reached out and pulled Freya inside with them—covering her eyes as her mistress succumbed to death.

It took ages. Far longer than would have seemed possible. When at last they thought she’d finally expired, she threw back her head with a final bloodcurdling cry.

“Seven hells,” Evie gasped, averting her eyes.

The boys were still watching, but both looked grim. Even borderline sick. When the witch’s roasted arm fell with a thud against the wall, sending up a cloud of smoke, Ellanden pulled in a sharp breath and turned his face.

“Is it over?” Freya whispered, clutching fistfuls of his cloak. “Is she gone?”

The fae glanced at his friends for quick confirmation before tightening his grip on the girl, holding her safe against his chest. “Yes, child. She’s gone.”

Slowly, he released her. Slowly, the friends took a steadying breath.

“We need to get out of here,” Asher said in a low undertone. “She said the men would arrive in the morning, and it’s almost dawn. And if they saw the fire...”

...they were bound to have quickened their pace.

“Where will you go?” Freya asked, staring numbly around what used to be her yard.

“Where will we go,” Ellanden corrected quickly, using the keys to free the others. “Don’t be ridiculous; you’re coming with us.”

The girl looked up in surprise, while both his friends stiffened behind her back.

“We’ll take you away from this place, surely,” Evie said tentatively, trying to catch the fae’s eye. “And we can decide what to do from there.”

“What is there to decide?” he demanded, missing all of those covert ‘can-we-talk-about-this-in-private’ looks he was getting from the other two. “The girl saved our lives. We’re in her debt.”

After getting the princess’ elbow in his ribs, Asher stepped forward with a sigh.

“And I can think of no worse way to repay such a debt than by keeping her with us. The road we’re to travel is not an easy one.
