The player was startled to see the three young children skating over to him dressed in hockey gear.

“Hi! You’re Rizzo, right?” asked Juanito, showing the brashness he often didn’t realize he had.

“Yup, that’s me. I’m Mike Eruzione, captain of the U.S. squad,” said Eruzione. “Who are you?” “We’re big fans,” said MJ.

“And we noticed you seem to be having trouble with your wrist shot,” said Jamie. “Maybe we can help.” “I wish you could help me,” Rizzo said. “Everything was going fine until the other night. I woke up out of a deep sleep and, right away, knew something was wrong. Ever since, I haven’t been able to put the puck in the net. I’m especially having trouble nailing home my wrist shot. I’m in a wicked slump.”

Juanito and MJ stared at Jamie. The look in their eyes told her they now knew what she had figured out just moments earlier: They had traveled back in time to help Mike Eruzione with his wrist shot—the same shot Juanito failed to score on in the driveway after the lightning struck!

“Want to practice taking a few?” MJ asked Eruzione. “We’re ready to play.”

Rizzo thought for a moment. “Sure, why not,” he said. “I could always use some extra practice . . . especially tonight.”

Jamie smiled and whispered to her friends, “Remember, this locker is supposed to give us special powers. We’re going to be awesome out there!”

They nodded, recalling the Coach’s note as the three time travelers skated down to the far red line.

“You know, I’m not nearly as good a hockey player as the rest of the guys,” said Rizzo, as he began skating.

Jamie, MJ and Juanito glided along next to him.

“But Coach Brooks kept me on the team and made me the captain. I guess he saw something. . . .

“I just wish my shots could find the net,” he added.

He was skating fast now, and he knew it. He looked over at the kids, who were skating right alongside him. “Hey, you guys rock! You can really skate.”

“Thanks,” Jamie said, as she cruised past Rizzo.

“Anyway,” he continued, “it would be great if I could start scoring tomorrow, against the Soviets.”

“You guys seem so much younger than those Russian players,” said Juanito.

“We are,” said Rizzo. “Buzz Schneider and I are the oldest on the team, and we’re only 25. And Mike Ramsey is just 19. We’re the youngest Olympic hockey team the United States has ever had.”

“Well, we better get busy, then,” said Jamie, as she skated back over to meet Rizzo and her friends at the net. She was amazed at how skillfully she moved on the thin blades of metal. She had never been able to skate so well before.

“OK, Rizzo,” she said, full of confidence. “Let’s see that wrist shot.”

For the next half-hour, the kids put Mike Eruzione through his paces. They practiced taking turns feeding him passes that he turned into wrist shots.

Jamie, MJ and Juanito were astounded by how well they could play. Their skating and stick-handling were superb.
