By the time my mom arrived, I was settled on the couch with my comics (no headphones this time) and the sheets were tumbling in the dryer. “This is an interesting place!” Mom said, looking around. “And all those mirrors in the entryway! Kind of spooky, if you ask me.”

The mirrors are the least spooky thing here, I thought. But I just said, “Mm-hmm.”

“How has everything been?”

I thought about everything that had happened. I wouldn’t even know where to begin. If it were Beth asking, I’d launch into a detailed story about my trials of the day. But this was my mom. She’d probably grow overly concerned and try to take over the rest of the babysitting shift. So I just said, “Fine. Everything’s been fine.”
