Chapter 26

Their breakfasts finished, Albert and Margot discussed how best to tackle the tasks on their list. It made sense to stick together – there was no question they were in danger, but to cover the most ground they also needed to split up.

Albert wanted to visit the coroner’s office or, more accurately, he wanted Margot to. He would go with her, but she was going to have to break some rules if they hoped to get answers. Curtis required some investigation. Turning up with a convincing limp so soon after Rex bit someone wasn’t enough to colour him as guilty, but it went a long way.

“Rex might be able to identify him,” Albert suggested when they had discussed it.

Margot did little to hide her scepticism. “I don’t think canine line ups are admissible in court in any country, but they are certainly not allowed in France.”

Rolling his eyes, Albert said, “What I mean is, he could tell me if Curtis is the man he chased.”

Margot’s frown deepened even further. “How exactly is he going to do that?”

“Nevermind,” Albert dismissed the subject. “Just trust me. Rex is the smartest darned dog I ever met. He will find a way to let me know.”

However, before they even thought about tracking down Captain Allard’s youngest son, they wanted to speak with the residents of the houses whose gardens Rex chased the unknown assailant through. They might have seen something. Someone might even have a camera pointing that way; such devices were so prevalent now.

Also on the list was the urgent need to find out who opposed the Swedish application to excavate Drucker’s Field. They agreed the name on that form had to be there because whoever it was knew about the body; the coincidence was too great to believe any other reason.

Overarching it all, the need to keep their investigation hidden from the police and anyone else who might be involved – difficult when they couldn’t guess who knew about the body – could not be ignored. They were going to have to step carefully and no mistake.

“Ready? Margot asked.

Albert aimed his feet at the stairs. “I’ll just fetch Rex.”

Rex was on the bed. To his way of thinking, he was already in the old man’s bad books for stealing the bread and making a mess in the kitchen, so having a doze on the soft, spongey mattress couldn’t make things any worse.

He heard Albert approaching anyway, his ears attuned enough to recognise the sound and cadence of his human’s footsteps. Coming down off the bed, Rex checked the covers. His human made the bed neat when he got out of it, a habit Rex found just as odd as the rest of human behaviour. Now a distinct divot showed where he’d been resting.

Taking one edge of the covers between his teeth, Rex gently tugged, making the surface flat once more. Wagging his tail at his own ingenuity, Rex spun around and sat looking obedient and happy when the door opened inward.

Albert narrowed his eyes.
