The way a house is used is also relevant. If it is occupied throughout the day and is heated with constant, low-level underfloor heating, for instance, an external insulation system will exploit the thermal mass of the masonry walls and help to level out internal temperature fluctuations. If the building is largely empty during the day, and intermittent heating comes on just morning and evening, internal insulation will be more thermally responsive. Whichever solution is finally agreed, it is crucial that it is well detailed and supervised by professionals with expertise in the type of building involved. The more complex the solution, the more care needs to be taken when installing or fitting, so the choice of contractor, coupled with on-site supervision, becomes critical. Above all, always check that the solution proposed is ultimately compatible with the building’s fabric over the longer term.
