Chapter Twenty-Nine

WORRY FOR JAX CLUNG to me and wouldn’t let go. The strange bond that I still couldn’t explain had strengthened. I now knew the source was in Romania, but I had no clue what it was. I went to bed and stared up at the ceiling for several hours before finally falling asleep.

My dreams were dark and disturbing. I saw Jax tied up in the same stone basement. He struggled against his bonds, but couldn’t break free. I sensed magic and knew he’d never be able to escape from the chains. I caught sight of something I hadn’t seen the last time I’d been here. A trapdoor was partially covered by wooden boxes. I drifted over to it, then sank down through the boards.

I wasn’t in my astral form and was more like a ghost as I found myself in an ancient stone stairwell. There were no railings as I peered down into gloom. It was so dark that I couldn’t see all the way to the bottom of the stairs.

I began to descend and floated down several flights when a sense of overwhelming evil wafted up from below. Reeling back from it, I fled, but it chased me. A sense of triumph that I’d felt before washed over me, but I passed through the trapdoor before its power could sink into me.

Jax shouted behind his gag, sensing the malevolent presence. He couldn’t see or sense me and he had no idea he wasn’t alone to face the creature. It pushed against the trapdoor, but a spell seemed to be containing it. The menace subsided and I felt it sinking back into the depths of the stairwell.

Waking up, I sat up and shuddered. The dream faded away, leaving me with an impending sense of dread that my end had just drawn closer.

“It’s going to happen soon,” I whispered so I didn’t wake Emma up. It was an hour before dawn, but I couldn’t go back to sleep now. Getting up, I entered the bathroom to take a shower.

Stripping off, I turned the water on and stepped beneath the spray. I’d just finished rinsing the conditioner out of my hair when the air shimmered and the fae emissary appeared right in front of me. We gaped at each other and his face became as crimson as his hair and suit.

“Get out!” I shouted, twisting away and covering myself with my hands as he whirled around to turn his back to me.

“I’m so sorry!” he blurted. “I miscalculated my destination slightly.” Just under five feet tall, he was slender, had scarlet hair and pale-yellow eyes. His outfit was the exact same shade as his hair. It was made from a shimmery fabric that I knew would catch and reflect sunlight. Like all full blood fae, his skin was so pale it was almost translucent. His veins were too prominent and his ears and teeth were pointed.

He vanished from my bathroom and I put both hands over my face in mortification. “God, I hate it when Yas is right,” I said, words muffled behind my hands.
