Snap

This noisy and fun game is one of the greatest-loved children’s card games. Two or more can play. A standard deck is used. It doesn’t matter if any cards are missing. It’s a good idea to use two decks if more than three people are playing. Players strive to win all the cards. The dealer deals out all cards in a clockwise direction—face down, one at a time. It’s OK if some players have more cards than the others.

Players put cards in a neat face-down pile in front of them. Players may not look at their cards. The player to the dealer’s left turns over the top card of his or her face-down pile and places it face up to start a face-up pile of cards next to his or her face-down pile. The player to the left does the same and so on around the players. Whenever any player sees that the top cards of any two face-up piles have the same value—two kings, two sixes, two tens, etc.—that player shouts, “Snap!” This player collects both piles of cards and places them at the bottom of own face-down pile.

Play continues with the player to the left of the last player who turned over a card. If two players shout “snap!” together, the matching face-up piles are pooled in the center. Players continue turning over cards. The first player to shout “snap pool!” when the top card of any player’s face-up pile matches the top pool card collects the pool pile along with the face-up pile and places them at the bottom of his or her own face-down pile.

Whenever players run out of face-down cards, they turn over their face-up cards on their next turn. If a player calls “snap!” in error, that player must give one card from his or her own face-down pile to each of the other players. The winner is the player with all the cards in the end.
