Boca used to be a rhinoceros. That was back when she was dying.

The dog grew a three-inch tusk right between her eyes. The veterinarian said it was cancer, the worst kind, and told Patty to prepare to grieve. But during her divorce, Boca had been the only joint property Patty had been ready to fight over. She wasn’t about to give up fighting.

Two years and $10,000 later, the tusk is gone. The vets keep Boca’s photo in the radiology lab as a humble reminder that they aren’t always right.

Boca is still the sage of the household. She still joyfully helps discipline the cats when Patty’s mad at them. Yes, the radiation clouded her eyes and turned her black face into a photo negative, startlingly gray.

“I think she’s beautiful,” Patty says.
