Chapter 11

“Shit,” I murmured as I started to slowly raise my hands.

“Jonah,” Elaine said in a low voice.

Before I could answer, someone else in the shop let out a high-pitched scream, and the masked man pointed the gun at us and motioned us to the ground.

“I said get on the fucking ground!”

The young woman employee behind the counter lurched for something, so the masked assailant aimed his gun above her head and pulled the trigger. The glass case behind her exploded, and broken glass rained down over her. She threw her arms above her head and screamed as she fell to her knees, and I could see blood spurt from her legs as she kneeled on the sharp broken glass.

“Oh, hell no,” I said, and I stepped forward.

“Stop right there!” The assailant swung the gun toward me and aimed it at my head.

I raised my hands instinctively. I didn’t want this thug hurting anyone else, and I didn’t want to hurt anyone when I took him down, so I had to play this right.

“Alright, let’s not get carried away,” I said in what I hoped was a calming voice, and I inched my body to the left so I was slowly positioning myself in front of Elaine.

“How about you do what I fucking say?” The masked man shook his gun in my face, and I could see his dark brown eyes darting around wildly. “Unless you want a fucking bullet in that smart mouth of yours.”

“Okay,” I said in a level tone. I didn’t want to spook this guy any more than he already was. He clearly wasn’t afraid to use that gun, and while I was protected with the power of the cuffs, a bullet was lethal to everyone else in the family-owned jewelry shop.

I heard people whimpering behind me, and I took another microstep sideways to put myself between Elaine and his gun barrel.

“Are you fucking stupid, get on the ground!” The wannabe robber’s hand shook as he waved it around again, and I could tell he wasn’t expecting someone to defy his orders or disregard his gun.

“Look, man, I just wanna--”

Before I could finish, the masked assailant aimed the gun just above my head and squeezed the trigger. There was another chorus of screams from the other shop-goers, and before I could act, one of the customers attempted to run for the door.

The robber reached out, grabbed the customer around the neck, and pulled her against him, which created a human shield between me and the thug.

“Do what I fucking say, or I’ll shoot this bitch,” the masked man snarled. He pressed the barrel of his gun against the woman’s temple, which caused everyone else in the store to gasp.

Damn. I couldn’t risk using my powers and hurting the civilian.

“Please, no!” the captive customer bawled. She was a middle-aged woman with a dark brown bob that was graying at the edges. She
