Chapter Ten

“You don’t have the authority to fire us, Reynolds, so shut the fuck up,” Laura spat at the man on the camera. “Who do you think you are, spouting off something like that?”

“Maybe not yet, but you fuckers aren’t going to be around for much longer,” Reynolds continued. “The director isn’t happy with your little foreigner there using her dodgy contacts.”

“Hey,” I growled in a warning tone.

“Dodgy?” Elaine echoed with a dangerous edge to her voice. “They are not dodgy, I’d trust them with my life.”

“Well, you’re more than welcome to do that, sweetheart, but forgive me if I don’t trust them with mine,” Cutshall said, and he leaned forward with a glint in his eyes.

“Enough bullshit,” I said, and the men in Chicago fell silent. “What’s all this about? You dragged us here to fake-fire us, or what?”

“This is about how your friend’s contacts, Eli and Shoshanna Blau, have been linked with numerous dangerous criminals since their arrival in New York City, and they’re not allowed anywhere near this case, and, by extension, you,” Reynolds said, and he grew heated with each word so his face was beet-red by the time he finished talking.

“Are you done?” Elaine asked sarcastically, and I couldn’t help but smile at my badass girlfriend who wasn’t afraid to stand up to these seasoned FBI agents.

“The director personally vetted Elaine’s contacts,” Laura said in an eerily calm voice.

“That was until we found these photos,” Reynolds said, and he held up a photo of Eli and Shoshanna standing a few feet behind the Sidorov brothers. The married couple were glaring at the hulking thugs while the brothers walked out of a strip club somewhere in the city.

“That’s not proof of anything,” Laura snorted. “They’re hardly communicating, they’re nowhere near each other.”

“Shosh is glaring at them, look,” Elaine said with a giggle.

Agents Reynolds and Cutshall bristled at our reactions, so I decided to keep it up.

“I mean, you can tell by their body language they hate those guys, and like Laura said, they’re not communicating with them,” I said with an eye roll. “They’re in the same industry, they’re bound to cross paths at some point. I can’t believe you two really thought you’d done something here. Laura, I thought there were entrance exams to get into the Bureau?”

“I guess they had lower standards all the way back when these jokers signed up,” Laura scoffed.

“Funny, I was thinking the Bureau plain got rid of their standards when they let you in, Mayhew,” Reynolds sneered.

“Ohh, good one,” Laura said sarcastically, which caused her rival to bristle in anger.

“Bottom line is, you and your little team are done,” Reynolds said between gritted teeth. “We’re meeting with the director in less than twenty minutes, and I know he’s going to agree with me on this one.”

“Hey, when you’re talking to the director, could you mention this, please?” Elaine pulled out the folded-up piece of paper from her pocket and showed it to the camera.

“What is that?” Reynolds demanded with narrowed eyes.
