Chapter 2

No sooner had they landed, that a storm came up and all of the children were separated. It was a very frightening experience. They had not been apart once in the last three hundred years. Fionnuala became frantic. She was the oldest and had always protected her brothers. She sheltered as best that she could and waited for the storm to end so she could begin searching for them. The storm was horrid, she hoped that her brothers had found some sort of shelter. Large ice pellets were hitting her and the cold wind was blowing against her feathers and some of her skin was laid bare. She knew that this was to be an awful three hundred years. She was so very sad the next morning after the fierce storm had passed. Her brothers were nowhere to be seen. She swam a far distance, calling to each one of them and they could not be found. She climbed out of the cold sea and found a little shelter under a bush near the water's edge. Her wings were frozen to her sides and she had to get out of the cold water for awhile. She began to weep at the thought of never seeing her dear brothers again. The dear brothers that she had sheltered under her wings when they were sleeping. This sea of Moyle was so awful. She did not want to think about spending the next three hundred years here all alone. She was miserable and continued weeping.

Meanwhile, the twin boys had found each other and after recovering from some minor injuries, they set off searching for Aodh and Fionnuala.

That night, Fionnuala heard something splashing in the water. She swam out to where she had heard the noise, hoping it was one or even all of her brothers. It was not them, instead, she was greeted by a strange looking water spirit. The spirit was human shaped, but translucent. She looked like she was made of water.

" Hello, I am an asrai. My name is Moire and I know about your pain. I have looked into your mind and in it I have learned your sad story. I can help you if you ask."

" I have never learned of an asrai. What are your abilities?"

" I am known mainly in Alba. I can only talk with you at night, if I am in sunlight any, I will melt into a puddle and disappear forever. I sense much magical qualities inside of you and I can help you to develop them. I will also help you to be reunited with your brothers."

" I am Fionnuala and I accept your offer, Moire!"

During the entire year that followed her meeting with the asrai faery, Fionnuala met with Moire all night. Since she was awake all night, she slept all day. She had painstakingly made a little shelter for herself just offshore, out of twigs and dried grass. It was hard work, carrying each twig and blade of grass with her beak and placing each one to make a small home.
