We walked through the woods in near silence, with only my own missteps on branches and rocks making any sound. Ahead of me, Ozias passed through the forest like he was born of it. He never said a word to me, and by the time we reached the clearing, I was a ball of nerves from worry that the others would be equally closemouthed.

But I’d still talk to them, even if they didn’t respond.

The air tingled slightly as I passed the line of stones at the edge of the clearing, and I shivered. That had to be the magic defense they’d told me about. The one I shouldn’t have been able to get past. That I could now either meant nothing or was a good sign they wanted me to return.

I hoped it was the latter.

The door swung open before we reached it, though no one was there. Ozias paused and then grunted, some trace of irony in the sound. Without a word, he motioned for me to go ahead of him.

Swallowing nervously, I did as he asked.

The warmth of the cabin surrounded me when I walked inside, and from the study near the end of the hall, I could hear the low murmur of voices. Taking a steadying breath, I made myself continue on until I reached the door.

“—find her out there, it’ll be Ozias.”

“Yeah, but what if the queen—”

Clay cut off as Lars put a hand to his shoulder, and to a man, the others followed the twins’ gazes to where I stood.

“Gwyneira.” Dex came over to me quickly, snagging a blanket as he moved.

I wasn’t sure what to say. It was the first time any of them had called me by my name rather than my title, but it didn’t feel wrong to hear them use it.

It felt safe.

He seemed to catch himself as he came closer, though. Watching me like I might bolt again, he carefully wrapped the wool around me and then stepped back, and the military-like tension I’d seen on him when we first met closed around him as solidly as the blanket around my shoulders. “Come in?”

I nodded, giving him a nervous smile. “Thank you.”

He nodded once, still eying me cautiously.

I stepped past him, turning my nervous expression on the others. They didn’t look much different from Dex in their own ways, none of them making a single move as if concerned about what I might do. “I wanted to say something.”

Clay’s blue eyes darted to the others, every trace of his jovial nature subsumed beneath caution. “Okay. What?”

I drew a breath. “I… I’m sorry.” A few of them shifted their weight warily, as if bracing for something. I pressed onward. “She lied, didn’t she? My stepmother with her stories of…” I felt bad even repeating it. “Of giants climbing the tower and killing my mother. She lied.”

Silence answered me for a long moment.

“Yes,” Dex said quietly, still as rigid as a soldier.

A shudder rolled through me and I nodded. “I’m sorry. For
