Chapter twenty-three

Eldoris

Edina and I spend the next few days keeping up appearances by roaming the Spring Court in search of the hellfire Fae. On the first day, I take her around the Iridis Hills, each one known for its growth of a different flower so the entire area looks like a rainbow from overhead. Next, we stop in a village nearest to the palace and get faerie cakes—cupcakes as she insists on calling them—from a renowned bakery, then to a tavern where some of the patrons teach her an old card game. Naturally, Edina wins, and only later does she tell me she’s been playing poker since she was a child.

The evening before we’re due at the palace, Radley returns from a trip into the Underground. According to his sources, the monarchs took Edina’s idea and moved all Fae families with children into their palaces to keep them safe. From the murmurs Radley heard, this stopped hellfire Fae from recruiting, and they’re now hiding somewhere as they plan their attack.

“Any idea on a place that can hide them?” Edina asks. The three of us sit around the fire, snacking on some berries the pixies collected during the afternoon. The sun slowly sinks below the horizon, casting everything in a soft golden glow as the dying rays filter through the trees.

“There are a few places large enough to host an army,” Radley says. “One is the Underground, but our intel suggests they didn’t linger, only used the tunnels. The rest are in the courts.”

“Wouldn’t the monarchs know if they were hiding in their court?” Edina asks. Radley’s mouth thins so it’s lost behind his beard, and he stares at Edina with soft eyes. “You think they’re working with one of the monarchs?”

“It would make sense,” he replies. “If I was a monarch who was mad about the impending alliance between Seelie and Unseelie forces, but also didn’t want to anger my current allies, I would hire outsiders to take care of the problem.”

“Did you?” Edina asks, but her voice holds no real accusation.

“If I did, why would I reveal my dastardly plan?” he cackles, imitating a villainous voice.

“Besides, the hellfire Fae have been organizing since we returned from the Witch War,” I add. “Edina and I announced our engagement and alliance in response to them, not the other way around.”

Radley shrugs “Maybe they want to stir the pot. Zahir is the newest,” he says, referencing the King of the Night Court. “He could be trying to prove himself.”

“Didn’t you say that the magical signature smelled like the Night Court?” Edina asks, but I shake my head.

“Hades wouldn’t have helped us if they were involved. She may hate her brothers, but she loves her court. Day Court has that big arena in the middle of the desert.”

“The late queen was killed by hellfire,” Radley says. “They wouldn’t do it.”

“That leaves Spring,” Edina says, running her hands through her hair. “Assuming neither of our mothers has anything to do with this.”

“Or they’re working solo,” I conclude.
