So Philip again begins his chase, and again the money disappears on expensive dinners and presents. Mildred is impressed, and she refers to him now as she was to refer to him so many times again as “a gentleman in every sense of the word.” Philip’s gentility, however, does not diminish his desire for her any, and her indifference to him in regard to romance merely whets his appetite more than ever. It is usual that man wants the thing in this world which is slightly beyond him. It is always clear that Mildred does not care for Philip in anything resembling a romantic way, and she is either attracted to him for his money or for the convenience which he offers. Whenever they fight she will remind him that he must take her as he finds her. And Philip does just that.
