Cornelius rolled over and winced. He felt his full two hundred and fifty-odd years and more. Though not badly hurt in the crash like Jerome, he and Dastan had been banged up a bit and the bruises were beginning to show.

He reached out to find the other side of the bed was empty. It was unusual for Dastan to be up before him. He must have really been out of it the previous night.

They were expecting Jerome to be discharged today, and he and Dastan had said they would go to the hospital to bring him back. When he remembered the aftermath of the crash, he could cry. His great grandson had become special to him, even more so perhaps than his son Jacoby… He let that thought go. He loved his son, but he’d been a difficult boy and even now, Cornelius didn’t always understand his moods.

He and Dastan had taken the younger man under their wing, though Cornelius still felt guilty about forcing him to meet Ciccone that day. He still wasn’t sure if it had been worth bringing Ciccone’s attention to his son again. He grimaced. Time to get up and begin the day.

The door to the bedroom opened and Dastan entered bearing a tray with coffee and breakfast. He set it on the bedside cabinet and helped Cornelius rearrange the pillows behind him, so he could sit up more comfortably. He had lost count of the number of times either one of them had nursed and cosseted the other back to health.

“How are you feeling?” Dastan asked as he slid back into bed on his side and sat up drinking his coffee next to Cornelius.

“As though I’ve been hit by a truck.” His slight smile let Dastan know he was recovering.

“What time is it?”

“Just gone 11am. I thought you deserved a lie in as Jerome is coming home later.” Dastan grinned at him. It was rare for either of them to still be in bed much beyond 8am, so an 11am start was more than just a lie in.

“Thanks, love.” Cornelius smiled as he buttered the croissant Dastan had brought him, still warm from the oven, then slathered it with strawberry jam. For a short while he ate and drank his coffee, enjoying the view of Bondi from their window facing the beach.

“Has Laertius returned?” he finally asked Dastan, turning from the view out of the window.

“Not yet. I spoke to Cassius this morning on the phone and he said they still intended to be back here by this evening. He wants to discuss a few things with us, and Jerome after he is back. I warned him that Jerome won’t have much stamina.”

“I still can’t believe he gave some of his blood to Jerome…”

“I think he feels it’s his fault that we got hit by the truck. He helped Persephone as well. She’ll be there tonight; I spoke to her earlier.” Dastan grinned. “I think she has a thing for our Jerome.”

Cornelius laughed, then grunted as his bruised ribs protested.
