Chapter 39
A deal was worked out in our secret meeting on the rooftop tea garden. Algernon the Poet would be allowed to come live in Pemberton on the condition that he didnât spill the big secret about magirot. I would be given full freedom to conduct my investigation as needed, as long as I could keep the bard away from the press and my nose out of trouble. I was given a fancy silver medallion known as the âNobleâs Favorâ to show government officials that I was allowed to do as needed.
This medallion would grant me access to the actual grounds where the Starfruit grows. Once I was ready to begin my investigation, that is. I still had to figure out how to cure the basics of Slimegill before I could do anything else.
I had considered asking Javier if he would sponsor some purchases so I could continue my investigation but decided to go against the trend. Everyone was always competing with one another for resources, asking for something would make me look just the same as the others. If I only gave to the world, people wouldnât be half of me. Was it wrong to ask for resources? Not at all, but I had to make myself different from all the others â I wasnât just representing myself but also fairykind at large.
And so I returned home with Algernon and nothing else in hand. It was a little disappointing that I couldnât stick around and shop or look at the city but I had no money to spend. Better save it for another day, when I had plenty of paint bucks in pocket!
The poet was pleased with the town. Upon seeing Pemberton, he declared he had never seen a place more in need of a local man with singing talent. Leaping atop the broken fountain in town square, he warbled out a tune that had caused Tagalong to join in from half a mile away. The crooner found a partner in the smaller duck and soon the pair were serenading each other to the point where it seemed like they were actually holding a conversation.
This episode provided Algernon with everything he needed to become inspired to paint. The only trouble was that he wasnât pleased with the collection of colors I had gathered for him. âWhat is this mess?â he had gasped upon seeing my jars. âThese are all blue! Even your pink is blue! I need at least two other colors to work â green and red would be perfect.â
I had tried to ask why my pink was blue but he didnât understand how I didnât understand and merely suggested that I read a book. When I told him that I had read thousands of books, he said it didnât matter because I hadnât chosen the right subjects. I dropped his ass off at the Salmon after that, telling him he was on his own until I could get his house ready. He didnât seem to recognize that as a punishment and was quick to begin regaling the barkeep with all sorts of tales.
