Chapter 19

High Tide opened her mouth and shut it again. “The Heir.”

Marten nodded. “Light brown hair and eyes.” He held out a hand at shoulder height. “About this tall.”

High Tide shook her head. “They all come in flat on their backs. Come with me. You’ll need to speak to the Heart.”

“I just need to look—”

She held up a hand to cut him off. “We’re full. Do you understand how many people that is? It’s quicker to speak to the Heart.”

“Thank you,” Stash said as put a calming hand on Marten’s shoulder. “As you can see, we’ve come a long way and are anxious to find her.”

High Tide gave them a polite nod before escorting them into a long waiting room. Benches ran down the room in rows. Marten was again surprised at the numbers that this temple must handle.

He sank down on the closest seat. His legs were still a little wobbly from the climb. “It’s bad news that they don’t know if she’s here.”

“If she’s unconscious...” Stash offered.

“Then we’re lucky. She might not be herself, or too injured...” he let he sentence hang, unable to say aloud what he most feared. He knew she was here. But that weird instinct wasn’t telling him anything about her condition.

Stash sat next to him with a groan. “I haven’t done much climbing lately.”

Marten forced a smile for him. “No. Me neither.”

“I bet they have hot springs here,” Stash said. “I could use a good soak.”

Marten nodded. He knew Stash was trying to distract him. He got up to look around the room. No windows. A big door at the other end looked like it had seen a lot of use. The floor was heavily scuffed. When he finally heard footsteps, he hurried back to the other door.

The Heart was a middle-aged man looking exhausted. “I am High Heat on the Plain, Heart of Long Mound.”

Marten made introductions. “We are looking for the Heir. The householder said you’d know all the patients.”

“I do,” the Heart said with a frown. “I don’t know the Heir by sight, but there are a number of women of her age here.”

“Light brown hair and eyes. Looks a little like me,” Marten said.

“You’re the...first born,” the Heart hesitated over the status of Marten’s birth.

“Her half-brother,” he clarified. “The queen sent me.” He could see the calculations going on in the man’s head. Was he here to take out the competition for the throne?

The Heart looked at Stash and back to Marten. His face changed as he read the tattoos. “Oh.”

“Is she here?”

“There are a few that fit the description, but I have to warn you that we got the very worst cases.”

“Why?” Stash asked.

“Because of the mines. Most of our Hands have dealt with the kinds of injuries that happen underground, cave-ins, gas explosions. The sort of things that happened in Obsidian. We have some very skilled Hands,” the Heart said proudly. He beckoned them to follow.

Marten’s heart sank. He’d feared something like this. After seeing Lance, who
