Putting Together a Fear Hierarchy

Therapist: You said that you limit your driving because you are afraid of hitting pedestrians. So, it sounds like a good situation for you to practice for exposure would be driving through the mall parking lot on a weekend afternoon.

Patient: Oh God, I couldn’t do that! I’d be too afraid. Maybe I could do it on a weekday when there are less people around.

Therapist: Well, as you know, the point of exposure is to practice taking risks where you feel afraid. You will see that your anxiety subsides and that your fears are less likely to occur than you think. So, suppose we begin with driving through the parking lot on a weekday with the aim of progressing up to trying this exercise on a weekend? Avoiding the weekend scenario altogether would not be a good choice.
