CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

For the second time that day I found myself in the police interview room. On the say-so of the police medic who looked me over, Garcia gave me a tea towel with some ice in it to put against the swelling on the side of my head, while he and a colleague took a statement. The process felt long and unnecessarily drawn out, with them asking me the same questions over and over, as though I’d suddenly remember something else. Or remember differently at least.

‘You don’t remember anything else about what they looked like?’ Garcia asked.

‘I already said everything I can remember. They had balaclavas. Jeans. The man in the van had dark brown eyes. Nike trainers. Black, white and red. The man who grabbed me had brown leather shoes. The left one had a scuff across the big toe area like he’d kicked something.’

I closed my eyes and tried again to remember but that made my headache even worse. I could picture the scene on the street with absolute clarity, even given my wooziness, but it all felt like too little, too late.

I opened my eyes again without coming up with anything more and put the soggy tea towel onto the table. The cool air on my damp skin caused a prickling sensation.

‘The man who grabbed you had dark brown eyes.’

‘Yes’. But had it just been because of the shadowy effect of the balaclava?

‘And the other?’ Garcia asked.

‘Green.’

Garcia sighed and looked over to his young female colleague. She’d not said a word and looked bored now.

‘And you’re sure you don’t remember the licence plate of the van?’ Garcia asked. ‘Because you seem to have remembered a lot of other small details.’ He said it almost as though accusing me of something untoward.

‘It’s not that I don’t remember it,’ I said. ‘I didn’t see it. But I told you the licence of the van I saw outside the hotel.’

‘Yes, but that van is still there, outside the hotel.’

I sighed, frustrated. I’d been suspicious of that van, which was exactly why I’d remembered the registration. I’d also been convinced the same van had been used by those attackers as it was the same type and colour. Perhaps if I hadn’t made that bad assumption, I might have been more focused on looking at the plate as it sped away.

‘Didn’t your colleagues get the licence plate?’ I asked. ‘They were there moments after the van shot off.’

‘I’m afraid not,’ Garcia said. ‘And they’ve checked their camera but the van was already out of sight.’

‘And Gus Patterson?’ I asked.

‘He says not.’

‘I’ve been followed several times now,’ I said. ‘It has to be the same people. There must be CCTV or something that would show them. The van too.’

‘There aren’t any cameras on that street.’

‘There are at the marina?’ I said.

‘Some, yes, but it’s not always easy to get access. The marina is private property. And the offence didn’t happen there.’

‘So you’re telling me there’s nothing you can do?’

‘I’m not saying there is nothing we can do.
