Something from a college paper woke me with a start before dawn. My deepest, most carefree sleep had suddenly been fractured by the insistence of something I knew, deep in my core. It was my legal duty, my solemn sworn oath, to protect the interests and legal representation of my clients. I had a professional as well as moral obligation to disclose Caddie’s insinuation of getting rid of Simon to the police. I had to. It was my job.

At a million miles a minute, I called room service for some breakfast, then I showered and dressed, ate and drank coffee, all while putting off the one thing I knew I should be doing. The professional thing to do was alert Griegson to what Caddie had told me, then go to the police with him. The pain in my chest, the aching hole that had been made whenever I wasn’t near or thinking about him, was making me prepare to drive back to Simon, to tell him everything. I couldn’t stand it any longer.

It was past six by the time I checked out, with a message from a different client cancelling. Strep throat.

Or haven’t slept yet from being out all night gambling? I know you too well, Dr. Jones… but thank you. It saves me giving you the same excuse.

Clipping my way to the parking garage, I realized after a few minutes how confused, dazed and worked up I really was. I was looking for my car, not a pink Jaguar, which I had passed several times before remembering I still had the key in my hand and had to fulfill Caddie’s request to return it to Simon.

At least I have a legal reason for going… Not like we’re gonna… Ah no you don’t! None of that! We’re just gonna… We’re just gonna…

The car purred to life, and I realized, with some pleasure, that the driver’s seat had a massage setting which Caddie had set to her own… feminine requirements.

No wonder she lives in the damned thing.

I spent the drive back to Simon going over things in my mind, from a legal perspective. If he didn’t know it already, Caddie was in no way ready to relinquish her end of the decade-long agreement. On paper, everything looked fine, but we at Griegson & Associates had to be wary as well, for sometimes a client would go behind the trustees’ back, setting up alternative, self-managed funds and just turn up one day demanding everything, or simply drawing all their assets overseas without notice. It couldn’t come to that with Caddie, but I knew after her performance in the car, to be extra careful and had no real idea how much, if anything, Simon knew, beyond the fact that Caddie was his adopted mother.

The morning was still, but cold. A fresh blanket of snow had covered everything from the day before, anew with a powdered softness that hid the jagged lines of rocky outcrops as well as the infinite, delicate lines of the trees.
