The press release had come through early, e-mailed to anybody who was anybody. Naturally, that didn’t include me.

I pulled on jeans, a tank top and two shoes that didn’t match—one white Adidas running shoe and one black jazz sneaker from Zumba class—and drove to the Tampa Daily Register in a fugue state, body shocked from tequila and murder. I didn’t remember the drive, but I must have made all the right turns because I got there somehow.

I fully expected Noah to fire me. I hadn’t worked out exactly how he’d know everything, but he would. He was a newsman. Newsmen knew things, and why else would he call me to work on Sunday morning? He wanted to can my ass in person and let me pack before everyone came back to work Monday. Everyone knows mid-week desk packing is bad for morale

Noah sat on the edge of my desk looking jittery. Maybe I had misjudged this. Maybe he would just punch me in the gut and call it an impressing life lesson. He thrust the press release in my face.
