Saturday evening, Juliet sat on her bedroom balcony, drinking Limoncello to calm her nerves. No, she wasn’t tense because she was going to break into D’Angelo’s house in another hour. She was edgy because she’d spent too long at the bridal party meeting that morning and afternoon.

Roseline had told the group of women that she was already getting headaches and having tummy issues because of the stress.

Maybe she wasn’t marrying the right guy was Juliet’s first thought. Then Roseline confessed that she was so nervous because she feared some of the bridesmaids wouldn’t be able to fit into the dresses in February. “People gain weight during the holidays,” she’d told them. “Please stay away from sweets this Christmas.”

Juliet had also discovered that the groomsmen would wear kilts at the ceremony. “Is Dexter Scottish?” she’d asked. Dexter sounded German to her.

“It’s an English name,” one of the girls had answered.

“So it’s not Scottish. What’s with the kilts?”

That’s when Roseline lost her ish.

Juliet drank the last of the liqueur and gazed at her phone. The battery was fully charged.

Excellent.

She peered at the horizon. Only the sun’s halo was left in the sky. The wind off the lake was up and whipping frigid air around the corner of the house.

Standing, she went back into her bedroom. It was time to dress. She’d already laid out her clothes on the bed: black pants, black sweater, black gloves, and shoes. She still needed one thing and went to the dresser to find her black ski cap and face covering. She left the face covering off for the time being and stuffed it hard into her pocket. The thing reminded her too much of her mother’s nagging about the upcoming ski trip. Juliet didn’t need her mother directing her social life, for heaven’s sake. Wasn’t breaking and entering a home with her cousin convivial enough?

Juliet stepped out of the room.

Paris stepped out of his room at nearly the same moment. He was dressed in a pale green sweater and jeans. The knit fit over his square shoulders and then hung off his trim body quite nicely, but it wasn’t something he should wear while breaking into a house. He asked, “Why are you dressed like a cartoon bandit?”

Juliet’s shoulders went limp. “I told you. We’re breaking into D’Angelo’s house.”

“That’s illegal, Juliet.”

She threw out her hand. “I’m not happy about it.”

“I’m not sure I believe you.”

“I don’t know when you started to believe such horrible things about me, Paris Nobleman. First, I’m trying to sabotage your house hunt and now I’m a happy burglar skipping off to work.”

How she hated a man who laughed uproariously.

She left Paris in the hallway and made for the stairs.

He caught up with her. “And if you get caught?”

“I’m not going to get caught. I’m going about this professionally.”

“Yes, yes, Ty is helping you.”

They made it to the first landing, and Juliet turned on him. “He’s not just a dancer. He’s broken into houses.”

Paris leaned toward her, practically nose-to-nose. “How many?”

“Er, one.
