The next thing, Nick and Teagan were at it on the quiet. Nick would prowl round in his Subaru and pick her up on the corner by the hot pork sandwich shop.
âLike a prozzie,â he said.
âFuck off,â she said, but she was grinning.
They would drive out to somewhere posh like the Strines Inn or Fox House, park the car and then go for a walk, lie down and shag in the heather. Afterwards they would go back to the pub and have a meal, Teagan giggling and pulling stray bilberries out of her cleavage.
She told Lisa it was all so Polish with Karol, eighties soft rock ballads and conversations about history, and she didnât like the way heâd started wanting her to cook for him. With Nick it was a dab of coke and a white wine spritzer, and his hand up her skirt under the table. A real thrill, like it had hadnât been with Karol for she didnât know how long.
Lisa always thought Nick was a bit square, but Teagan said he had really loosened up.

It was all whirling round in her head and would it be alright if they just sat and cuddled each other this time?
Nick yes it was fine, but in a way that meant no it totally wasnât. So when they drove out and parked up by a log pile at the edge of a conifer plantation, she leant over the handbrake and put her head in his lap.
It was awkward afterwards, and maybe because of that he took her straight home, instead of to the pub. Usually she had a chance to clean herself up in the pub toilets. When she walked in she knew she looked untidy, and anyway she was all flustered from going over everything in her head, and Karol looked at her strangely and she started to get a really bad feeling.
It turned out that Sebastian had seen her getting into Nickâs car that morning. When Karol confronted her she was still sconned out with
