Methodological Note

The empirical foundation of this chapter consists of seven focus group discussions with young students attending the 9th grade at a public Danish secondary school. A total of 24 students participated in the discussions that were conducted in between classes and during lunch breaks. Considering that the participants were between 14 and 16 years of age, consent was given both by the school and their parents for young people to participate. Before the focus groups began, consent from the young people themselves was also sought. The specific public school was chosen due to its location in municipality with a reasonably large socio-economically diverse population, also represented in the school itself. Talking to children of varied backgrounds allowed us to explore how young people understand travel differently, and relative to their peers. Focussing on their past travel experiences and their future aspirations in a class context allowed us to benefit from the familiarity between peers, but also their diversity in terms of background. This proved a useful setting for examining how travel ideals were negotiated and evaluated among children from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
