Chapter 16

Morgan signed off and turned off the portable aircraft transceiver, smiling. Looking up through his sunglasses at the freakish/unseasonably late fresh snow on the mountain above he zipped his fleece and brown goat leather flying jacket to block out the cold breeze that flowed across the white sea of the now snowy meadow and re-adjusted his dark sun glasses. Jon Sinclair walked over, closing up his cellular phone, " We're freezing our butts off and the whole New England area is drenched in 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity. Fund America is screaming at my CEO to get this done. Christ, I can't believe them."

"Jon, we'll get it done. This is actually better for us." Morgan said motioning at the cool air and snow around them.

"Why better? The ground is dry, was dry anyway." Looking at the snow on the ground.

"Not that. The ground is fine. The cool air is denser and will mean an easier pick up for the mule. It's a bit chilly, but I prefer this over a hot, 100 degrees. That'd be tougher to pick up the plane. 'Less air for the rotor blades to bite into. Besides, the snow isn't that thick." He said kicking the soft snow covering his boot. "If we wait until it thaws, that's another issue. Then the ground may be too soft for us to land the mule. It'd just make things a little harder. Right now, the timing is perfect." Morgan turned his head to listen in the breeze, "And speaking of perfect timing, here he is now."

Morgan and Jon turned at the sound of a faint whump whump whump whump. In the near distance, low to the ground they saw an ungainly looking helicopter. The mule, an old Army CH-54 Sikorsky Skycrane reconditioned by Erickson, looked like a cross between a giant lizard and a giant metal praying Mantis, flat olive green, long and slender with a bulbous over hanging glass and steel nose with the long spider leg landing gear protruding out and down from each side. A huge rotor spun above it providing the craft's immense lifting force. Capable of lifting 20,000 pounds and flying 200 miles, the craft was first built for the Army in 1962. This particular Skycrane was fitted with two Pratt and Whitney 4,500 shaft horsepower turboshaft engines. The whine of the turbines was just noticeable over the deep whump whump whump of the big 72 foot diameter, 6 bladed rotor.

Morgan walked out into the field waving his hands above his head to alert the pilot, then motioned for him to set it down near the downed plane. The giant Skycrane floated over near the plane and began to settle. The intense, high pitch whine of the twin turbines and whumping of the big rotor drowned out all other noise. The air swirled with the hot, pungent smell of burning jet fuel exhaust. The hard blast of air under the big rotor picked up and kicked around the powdery snow blinding everyone in a sea of cool white.
