CHAPTER FIFTEEN

A heavy weight seemed to bear down on Cole as she followed the hotel hallway, her room card in one hand and her duffel bag in the other. Two women were dead, and since she had confirmed that Greenman had indeed been with someone at the time of Garner’s disappearance (a statement that five of the girl’s friends had backed up, if more testimony were needed), she now realized that all she and Callaway had managed to do so far was rule out two suspects and generate some theories. They had no proof, no solid lead to go on, and she worried it might be only a matter of time before Sadie Nolan wound up dead, as well.

Callaway seemed to understand what she was feeling. As they reached their rooms, which were situated across the hall from one another, he placed his right hand on her shoulder and stared into her eyes. His left hand cupped his Stetson against his chest, exposing a head of hat hair in desperate need of shampoo.

“It’s going to get better,” he said to her. “Might have to get worse first, but I promise it’ll get better.”

“Feels like we’re down twenty-eight in the third quarter,” she said with an unhappy little laugh. She could smell the leathery scent of his cologne, and the nearness of it comforted her.

“Then we’ve got to make every possession count—and pray the other guy turns the ball over a time or two.”

She nodded and, with an effort, pulled herself together. Callaway smiled gently, giving her shoulder a squeeze, and then turned toward his door.

Cole had opened her own door and was about to close it behind her when Callaway called her name.

“I know it’s bleak now,” he said, “but his time is coming. Might not be today or tomorrow, but it’s coming, sure as the sunrise.”

Cole nodded again, grateful for his words. “Goodnight, Callaway,” she said.

He tipped his head toward her. “Goodnight, Cole.”

Exhausted, Cole entered her hotel room, emptied the contents of her pockets on the nightstand (including her gun, badge, handcuffs, cell phone, and car keys), and flopped down on the bed. She needed a good shower (she had a change of clothes in the duffel bag, which she always kept in the trunk of her car for trips like this one), but she didn’t feel like she had the energy to make it to the bathroom.

Instead she sat up and untied her hair, leaning against the headboard as she used a brush from the duffel bag to clear the tangles. She took her time, lost in thoughts of the case. She pictured Lindsay Garner propped in that porta potty, her drenched clothes clinging tightly to her body and bits of plant matter blotching her skin.

What do you know? Cole thought. What secrets could you tell me if only I knew how to ask the right questions?

Suddenly her phone buzzed, startling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the Caller ID. It was Bryce, a high school sweetheart with whom she had reconnected after moving back to New Mexico after seventeen years away.
