1. Prayer as Worship

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (v. 9).

We recognize who God is and his relation to the universe. While God is our friend, he is also the eternal Creator of the universe who holds the fabric of time together. While prayer can be very casual, we need to be careful that we begin by recognizing who we are talking to. He is our Father “in heaven.”

Next we have a sort of request: “Hallowed be your name.” Hallowed means “holy” or “sanctified.” It literally means, “Set apart” be your name. The “name” is not simply a handle of recognition, but an expression of God’s entire being. It is his reputation, the way we are to think of him.

In the first part of this model prayer, we have a recognition of who we are talking to and an expressed desire to make sure we carry, discharge, and represent who he is with great accuracy and reverence. Translation: when you come to God in prayer make sure you know who you are talking to!

To worship is to give credence to the worth of something. When we worship God, we are recognizing who he is before all else. Therefore, we begin all prayer with proper worship.
