~~ Chapter 11 ~~

Rebecca watched the screen intently. She recognized the man strolling out of his house as the one who had gleefully extinguished his cigarettes on her bare arm. They watched as he set off down the sidewalk, the 'camera' keeping pace with him. The bastard even paused to tousle the hair of a little boy and toss a stray ball back. She was so taking this asshole down as soon as he showed them where the kids were being held.

But even while she watched, she couldn't stop thinking of the man next to her. No other man in her life would have answered her questions about being king as Phillip had. They all wanted to be head-honcho, even if they weren't suited for the job. There was no consideration for personality types or skill sets. Every one of them seemed to have the idea that if they were in charge, things would be better—no matter how good things were with them not in charge.

Rebecca's life would be better if only she would let her father direct her every action. Her case-closing rate would be better if only she'd let Rick and Wallis take over for her. Even the guys she'd dated seemed to think the dates would be better if they got to make all of the decisions about where to go and what to do, and the guys her dad perpetually tried to set her up with were the worst of them all.

In marvelous contrast, Phillip didn't care about being in charge. He didn't want the spotlight or the acclaim. He stayed in the shadows, doing the dirty jobs so that his brother wouldn't have to, and he was content to do so. Happy about it, even.

God, that was sexy.

But this was not the time for thoughts like that.

The time stretched on. Surveillance was a necessary part of her job more often than she'd like, and she knew how to keep herself awake and alert through the boredom, but nothing changed the fact that it was boring. Their target emerged from his home only to walk down to the corner convenience store. When he returned home, Phillip slipped the dust-camera in through the open door behind him and they watched the target play video games. And eat. And sleep. And play more games. And amuse himself in ways that Rebecca wished she could unsee.

What he didn't do, however, was lead them to where the children were being held. Or even make contact with anyone who might lead them to the kids instead.

For three days, the time both dragged and sped. Rebecca felt the urgent need to find the kidnapped children and the frustration of being unable to progress in the case, all while fighting the boredom of a stakeout. At the same time, it was the best surveillance job of her entire career—entirely due to Phillip.

Their conversations were fascinating and intriguing, and she learned more about him, she thought, than even co-workers she'd worked with for years.
