Chapter Sixteen
Chima's hand was big and warm, and Beatriz could feel callouses from years of farm labor imprinted on it. He walked a step ahead, gently guiding her as they ascended a wide stairway from the estate's kitchen on the ground floor to the upper level of the west wing. Chima stopped them at the first door they came to on the left and pulled her in close. As he ran his mouth tenderly along the line of her neck, sending chills down her spine, his other hand reached for the door handle, and he pushed the solid wood open behind them.
"Come, mi reina," he whispered into her ear, and goosebumps broke out over her body. Beatriz could only look in wonder at the room he guided her into.
To the left, a large stone fireplace was framed on either side by giant windows that looked out through tree branches to a bluff over the Pacific Ocean. Comfortable, deep-brown-leather chairs sat before the fireplace with a tall pile of textbooks stacked on a side table next to one. Beyond that was another wall of windows filled with a myriad of potted plants and flowers along the bottom and a set of French doors that opened onto a balcony, also gushing with verdant plant life.
Beatriz could not help but blush as her gaze landed on the giant king-sized bed that dominated the last wall. Made of a sturdy wooden canopied frame that matched the Spanish Mission architecture of the house, twisting ivy vines covered the posts until it looked like a living thing growing from the floor. The vines bent and reached out from the bed frame along the top of the walls, like arms snaking across the ceiling.
As Beatriz took all of this in, Chima let go of her hand to kick off his shoes and wandered over to the comfy chairs. With a remote control, he turned on the gas fireplace that instantly lit the room in a warm glow. With another press of a button, twinkling lights lit up within the twisting reaches of ivy around the bed and ceiling. Her breath caught as the space went from a dark mystery into something completely magical.
"You like it?" Chima asked as he threw his tux jacket on the back of one of the chairs. He began to undo the cuff links on his shirt and roll up the sleeves, baring his strong arms.
"It's beautiful. You can grow anything, can't you?" She kicked off her shoes by the door as Chima had done and stepped further into the room.
Chima left his position by the chairs, came to her, and pressed their bodies together, sending a thrill of electricity through them both. "You make some things grow, too," he said softly in her ear as he placed her hand along the bulge in his tuxedo pants.
Beatriz laughed. "Oh my god, you did not just say that."
"That was really cheesy, wasn't it?" He chuckled as his mouth nestled against her neck.
She was nervous but didn't pull her hand away.
