Chapter Twelve

Milly

I’m back in Eli’s truck, draped over the middle bit between the seats, my head resting on his thigh as he drives us out of town. My heart is beating out of my chest. I’m terrified that somebody will see me.

“This is so fucking ridiculous.”

He reaches down and brushes my hair out of my face. “It’s only five minutes out of town. I’m sorry. You’re the one who insisted that this was a secret.”

My first instinct is to reply ‘Because of your dad’, but he doesn’t need to know that his dad is a complete asshole. If he hasn’t worked it out already, I’m not going to be the one to break the news to him. I already made him google nipple clamps. Today’s goal is to avoid springing anything shocking on him. So far it’s going well.

“I know you’re right. It’s just kind of bumpy down here.” He slides his hand under my head and keeps it there. He has really big man hands. He’s quite big all around, bulked up and tall—or at least taller than most of the people I’ve dated before. Am I dating him?

“Eli, are we dating?”

“Uh…I don’t know. Do you want us to be dating?” My stomach does a little backflip because my gut is secretly a romantic. My body really needs to calm its shit. The way he said it, though…like it could happen, like we’re not sneaking off somewhere to make out and that this is a date.

Keep fooling yourself. It’s not like that and it never will be.

“It’s less sordid than friends with benefits.” That just hasn’t sat right with me since last night.

His hand grasps me a little tighter. “Do you think of what we’re doing as sordid? Milly, you are okay with this, aren’t you?”

I nestle into his hand. He is warm and comforting and safe. I trust him implicitly, especially when he says things like that. “Yes.” In the light of day and with a lot of thought I am okay—maybe not with the sneaking around, but this doesn’t mean that I’m doing anything wrong.

On the contrary, lying there on his lap, his fingers running through my hair, feels like the most right thing in the world.

“We’re here. You can get up. Nobody comes out here except me.” I sit up straight and look around. We’re in some kind of farm. There are a couple of outbuildings and fields with horses in them. “I wanted you to meet my babies.”

We climb out and I follow him over to a high wooden fence. He climbs up and whistles, but the horses, having seen us arrive, are already galloping our way. He pulls me up next to him and we sit side-by-side, my hand in his.

Dust rises behind the horses as they slow their approach. They’re sleek, graceful. It’s like a scene out of a movie. “How many do you have?”

“I’ve got five quarter horses. Trained them myself. The youngest, Smoky, he’s still learning. I thought you might like to see me work with him today.
