Thirty long, tiring minutes later, they were clustered in the interview room at the police department which they were now starting to know well. Juliette sat across the desk from Fabio, staring at him intently.

She wondered what could have driven a man to such lengths, to flee into the darkness of underground tunnels, risking his life and theirs in the process.

He looked exhausted, and far less aggressive than he had as he'd faced off with them at his balloon stand. He looked worn out, drained of all energy. His shoulders were hunched. The black T-shirt he wore was smeared with dust and grime.

"Okay, Mr. Giovanni Fabio," she said, breaking the silence. "Let's start at the beginning. Why on earth did you run into those tunnels after we said we wanted to question you?"

Fabio looked up at her, his eyes dark and haunted. "I was trying to get away," he said simply.

"From what?" Wyatt asked, leaning forward in his chair.

Fabio hesitated, as if unsure whether to answer. But then he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. "From them," he said.

"Who is 'them?’" Juliette pressed, her curiosity piqued.

Fabio's eyes flickered between Wyatt and Juliette, as if weighing his options. Finally, he spoke.

Fabio swallowed hard, his eyes flickering around the room as if he was afraid of being overheard. "The Camorra," he said finally.

Juliette and Wyatt exchanged a look. The Camorra, she knew from her research into European crime, was a powerful and dangerous organized crime syndicate that operated in Naples and the surrounding region. They were a separate organization from the Mafia they’d already dealt with in this case, and so far their suspects seemed to have no link to them. But Fabio was clearly terrified. And with reason, she guessed, since the Camorra were known for their brutality and willingness to use violence to protect their interests.

"What did they want with you?" Wyatt asked, his tone firm.

Fabio shook his head. "I don't know," he said. "I swear to you, I don't know. But they've been watching me, following me. I've seen them on the street, in the market. I thought they were going to kill me."

Now, Juliette was feeling more dubious.

She was wondering if they'd gotten a completely wrong handle on this man. Because where did this come from? Why would he have run?

"Why do you feel this way?" she asked.

"I don't know." He looked at her, frowning. "But I do feel it. Strongly. I know it's the truth."

"Has anything ever happened to you?" Juliette leaned forward, her gaze intense. "Did you witness something? Hear something you shouldn't have? Anything that might have made them think you're a threat?"

"Not yet," he said, his voice haunted. "But I know it could happen. At any time. I have heard they have taken over a new territory near here, that they threatened the bar owner on the side of that square where I work."

Juliette was beginning to realize that this man was feeling oppressed, not by what he'd done, but by fears of what could be.
