The first thing I did when I got back from Italy was to run to Mi Tia’s. I’d brought back as many Catholic rosaries as I could stuff into my backpack; blessed crucifixes and a few dashboards Mary’s topped off my gift list. Needless to say, they were big hits.

What was even bigger, was Manuel. I didn’t realize boys could grow so much so fast. He towered over me and had a man voice I didn’t recognize. It was as if I’d left him a boy and returned to a man. It was slightly disconcerting.

When he walked into the store and saw me, his face registered the kind of delight everyone wants to be greeted with. In five long strides, he ran across the main aisle and scooped me up in his arms. He held to me so tightly I could barely breathe. Once his arms were around me, he swung me around laughing with that new man voice.

“When did you get home?” He asked. English, of course, was acceptable in the store.

“I… can’t breathe.”

“Put her down, dummy,” Juanita said to him in Spanish. “You’ll hurt her.”

Manuel put me down and then looked at me with a great big smile. “You look great.”

“And you look tall, cabrone. Have you been eating spinach?” I laughed, stepping back to take a look at him. “What happened to the boy I left?”

Suddenly, there was movement behind him. “Ahem.”

We both turned around to see a small blonde girl glaring at him with her arms across her chest. I knew in an instant that she was the new girlfriend.

“Oh. Wow. Sorry. I was just so excited that Drew is back. Drew, this is Hillary. Hill, this is my best friend, Drew. The one I’ve been talking about all summer.”

Hillary forced a smile, and when I say forced, I mean it took everything in her power to make that smile happen. I can only imagine how sick and tired she was of hearing about me. When it came to girls, Manuel wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.

“Manny’s told me a lot about you.”

Manny? Ugh. I hated her already. “Well, he’s biased.”

Her eyebrows shot up. “So I’ve noticed. I guess that’s what happens when you grow up together. Well, honey, I need to go. Enjoy your visit. It was nice meeting you Drew.” She stepped on tiptoe and kissed his cheek. Manuel turned a hundred shades of red.

When she was gone, his shoulders dropped down from around his ears.

“Hillary, huh? Where did you meet her?”

“School. She’s a year older, but enough about her. How are you? You look great.”

And so, we left Hillary in the dust as we took our customary walked to the park to sit on the swings like when we were kids. He surprised me by tossing his arm around my shoulders as we walked. It felt so good to be with him. I really missed him so much when I was in Tuscany, I called him a couple of times a week.
