Timâs study was next to his bedroom on the second floor of his parentsâ four-bedroom house. The walls were papered in Star Trek paraphernalia, James Bond movie posters, and posters of R2-D2 from Star Wars. Royal blue carpeting was littered with scraps of computer paper, which Tim usually cleaned up by the end of the day.
Tim was in an accelerated class at school and found his day over with by one in the afternoon. He did not partake in extracurricular activities. No sports, no debate classes, no band lessons. Just school and his computer.
His father had purchased Tim every on-line communication service available. Tim could access libraries, join in chat rooms, and illegally hack into a number of business and government programs. He had been hired by a few businesses to develop and maintain their Web sites, all fees which would be useful toward paying his college tuition. He had spent his summer taking college courses. That, and the evening courses Sam had talked him into, would enable him to complete college in two years.
Tim read one of his E-mail responses to his search for Sparrow. âPea brain,â Tim muttered as he deleted the obscene response. When a search through the electronic bulletin board proved fruitless, he tried an Instant Message. The message came back that the user was not signed on. That could mean either that Sparrow was not an America Online user or that he was but not signed on at the present time. And there was a third possibility. Sparrow could be the password he used when signing on or signing messages but not necessarily his user name.
Tim said out loud, âLooks like Iâll have to unleash RoboSpy.â Tim had written a program that was like an information-seeking robot which could search through databases for employment data, arrest reports, even government records. Timâs RoboSpy could not only search the intricate highways of the Internet, but it could also tunnel through the kill files and read any records that were supposedly deleted in search of whatever he asked of it.
He pushed up the sleeves of his sweater, weaved his fingers together, cracked his knuckles, and typed his command. When the command was completed, he went downstairs to eat.
By the time Tim returned, his software program had found hundreds of passwords using Sparrow, but only one person with a password and deleted messages signed by Sparrow. The E-mail address was [email protected]. Tim knew from biology class that Spizella was the genus of several small New World birds, such as the sparrow. His heart quickened. Tim sat down and composed a message to Sparrow.
