When Roo woke up from her nap, I got her interested in the stuffed mallard she chose for her own when she first arrived. She doesn’t really know any games yet, but puppies like to play, and playing with it made her happy, though not nearly as happy as it made me. I mixed in some of the sounds that had been scaring her. The clicking switch on the lamp. The loud old light switches. I reeled off some dental floss and put a dish in the cupboard. She learned the sound of sticky drawers opening. She learned the sound of the broken old garage door and the sound of the pipes hissing in the house when the hose ran. If it bothered her, she did what retrievers do. She took it out on the mallard.

From a left-for-dead shelter dog to blossoming puppy in a week. There was a long way to go, but there was no stopping Roo now.
