Chapter Fourteen

Kemal Mayfield appears not to be too pleased with the fact he is picked up by the police. Some people are very good at hiding their distress or at least in handling their stress. But Kemal evidently isn't one of those people. He looks nervously around and tries to read us, also not succeeding in hiding this.

'Sit down Kemal,' Yang says calmly. It is the first interrogation Yang and I are doing together, so I still have to find out what his interrogation style is like. It is probably far different from Lee's.

Kemal does as told, nervously running his hand through his dreadlocks. He doesn't say a thing, doesn't even ask why he is here. He has the behavior of a timid ten years old, not of the twenty years old he really is.

'Do you have any idea why you're here?'

He shakes his head.

'Do you know Justin Nye?'

He looks up, shrugs, but still doesn't say anything.

'Answer the question,' Yang says more firmly than before.

'Yeah, I know him.'

'Good, that was what he said.'

Kemal looks surprised. 'He is in jail.'

'Yep. We talked to him because we were looking for his weapon. And he said…' I pause to generate some extra effect, '…he said he gave it to you.'

'I don't know what you're talking about,' he says way too fast, which is a clear indication he is lying. He is talking now, but it isn't doing us much good yet.

'A shotgun, that's what we're talking about.'

'Like I said, I don't know nothing about a shotgun.'

'It is used in a murder Kemal. We know you had it, and if you keep denying it we will have to charge you with the murder!'

The threat is getting through to him. 'Murder?' he exclaims, sounding frightened.

'That's right.'

'Who's dead?'

'To whom did you give the weapon?'

He sighs, he doesn't want to give this person up. 'Kemal, we just want to know who holds possession of the weapon. When possible we will keep you out of it.'

He sighs again, deeper this time. 'Dane Conroy.'

*~*~*

'Good morning,' Lee greets me when I enter the detectives' room and go sit at my desk. His welcome sounds casual. Too casual. Especially when considering Lee is suspended from active duty and has gotten desk service.

'Hey,' I reply while reaching over to the cabinet behind me, getting myself the phone book. Conroy probably isn't listed, but one never knows for sure till this is checked. But I find out very soon he indeed isn't listed.

Lee follows our every move, apparently he thinks he has nothing better to do. Yang is already on the phone with the records department to see if this guy has a criminal record. I pick up the phone again to find out where Dane Conroy lives. When you are a police detective this is not very difficult to find out. The factor which determines how long it takes is not whether they want to help you or not, but how long they put you on hold before they help you.

Yang and I both put down our phones at the same time, which is kinda funny.
