Chapter Eighteen

TIM FOLLOWED MONTY’S SHIFT Tuesday, and she was grateful not to encounter Sarah. Tim said Sarah had called and asked him to trade because she didn’t feel well. On Wednesday, Sarah called Monty during her shift and begged her to work a double. Sarah sounded bad.

Mr. Whitfield arrived at two o’clock for his deposit visit.

“Hello, Monty. Where’s Sarah?”

“I thought she would have called you. She called me this morning and asked if I’d work a double. I don’t mind. She still didn’t feel well, and I don’t have anywhere else to be. Anyway, I hope I did everything right. I’ve tried to watch Sarah, even though I know this is her thing.”

Mr. Whitfield pulled the bag from the drawer and removed the stack of bills and paper. He nodded a few times and looked over his bifocals. “Monty, this looks just fine, especially for someone who’s not done it before. Good job.”

“Thanks,” Monty replied, playing it cool.

“Monty. Look. I need to say something. I’m sorry about asking Deputy Berrien about the money thing. I saw him at Sunday School…and we started talking…and—"

“Hey, Mr. Whitfield. No worries. I would have done the same thing if I’d been you. I get it.” She walked to the table where he sat behind the stacks of receipts and cash from the heavy vinyl bag.

“No. But it’s hard, Monty. I mean…Sarah’s my girl.” He wiped an eye with a finger under his glasses. “I don’t know why she would do something like this. If she wants something, she knows she can just ask. I can’t imagine it doesn’t involve that Jake, somehow.”

“Mr. Whitfield, it’s none of my business, but I know when you do something for someone, you want to be able to trust them. I think Jake is the problem.”

“What do you mean?” He pulled his glasses off and folded them closed, carefully placing them on the table.

“Are you sure you want to hear what I have to say? I mean, you may think I’m out of line here.”

“I asked you. Monty, whatever you think of me, I hope you realize that I appreciate a straight shooter. You leveled with me in the interview. Someone who is out to cheat someone isn’t that way. A cheater will give at least some lie. I haven’t seen that in you.”

“Okay,” Monty said hesitantly. “I think Jake’s hurting her. Was money gone after Thursday? I mean, I don’t even know.”

“It was, Monty. About two hundred dollars. Way off. No way anything totaled correctly.”

“I knew it.” Monty ran a hand across her head, mussing her hair. “She came in and could hardly walk. Last time, with the hundred, she had a grab mark on her arm. I don’t want you to think less of me, but I’ve seen all kinds of things…both on the streets and when I was incarcerated. He’s making her get him money. I’m really worried he’s hurting her…or going to hurt her worse than he has. I mean, she probably protests at taking the money.
